I am a Better Coach Today Because...

 Wednesday, 12 October 2016

 Cliff Devries

I am a better coach today because of John Wingfield. This past weekend I attended the Fall Clinic at Ripfest in Arcadia, Indiana. I have been coaching diving a long time. For 20 years I have been instructing divers and I have taken my education seriously. I have studied all of the USA Diving publications that I could find. I have read international diving books as well as many ancillary instructional materials. I consider myself well-versed in diving technique and instruction.

I expected to have a good refresher of many of the techniques and instructional methods that I already knew. What I got was a high level, intense course in diving training that filled some very important gaps in my knowledge. Having multiple lectures in nutrition for divers, sport psychology, and biomechanics made the clinic extremely valuable. All of the presenters were excellent. The three most beneficial lectures, for me and my divers, were Emily Gimm on athlete nutrition, Dr. Jeni McNeal on seasonal planning, and Janet Gabriel on talent identification. John Wingfield, the penultimate speaker, gave a brilliant lecture on the stages of an individual dive.

What’s more, is that my divers who sat through almost 20 hours of lecture enjoyed the clinic - - really enjoyed it. The Fall Clinic that John Wingfield set up made me a better coach.  Now comes the hard part - integrating the knowledge into my current system of coaching.
